In November, over 200 7th graders at American Canyon Middle School participated in mock interviews with industry partners. About 15 volunteers from Embassy Suites, The Westin, Redwood Credit Union, Silverado Resort, NapaLearns and the American Canyon Chamber participated in the day providing students with tips and feedback on how to “ace” their first interview! This event happened as a result of ACMS teacher, Sophia Androlowicz’s participation in the NEXT Teacher Externship program, a partnership between Napa County Office of Education & NapaLearns. Sophia took what she learned in her externship and created a lesson around career readiness which included career exploration, professional skills training and finally mock interviews! According to her, "Today was a huge success. Students were talking about their experience with students in other classes throughout the day -- I kept hearing about it. I would definitely like to do this project again next year.”
Our industry partners were impressed with how well the students were prepared for their interviews. Rachel Ferguson from Silverado Resort had this to say, "I simply loved speaking to the students today. Ms. Androlowicz did an amazing job of preparing them for our visit. They were engaged, focused, and ready to learn. They gave consistent eye contact to all of the participants, had great questions and ideas, and ended our conversations with perfect handshakes. I was thoroughly impressed by each person that sat at my table.” She went on to say, "I look forward to the next invitation. Being a part of developing such impressionable minds, motivating them to think about their career paths so early in life, is exactly what our society needs. We have not done a good job of this, and we have to do better. This program is a step in the right direction."
Thank you to Ms. Androlowicz and all of our industry partners who made this amazing experience possible!
